How it works
A lens has no field of view on its own — the sensor behind it decides how much of the image circle becomes the frame. This calculator gives the horizontal, vertical and diagonal angles for any focal length on any sensor, the frame size at a chosen distance, the full-frame equivalent, and the reverse question: how far away you need to be to fit a subject of a given size.
FAQ
- What does "35 mm equivalent" mean?
- The focal length that would give the same angle of view on a full-frame (36 × 24 mm) sensor. A 35 mm lens on APS-C frames like a 53 mm on full frame; multiply by the crop factor. Aperture scales the same way for depth of field, not for exposure.
- Horizontal, vertical or diagonal — which one do I use?
- Lens makers quote diagonal because it's the biggest number. For planning a composition, horizontal (landscape) or vertical (portrait) is what you actually frame.
- Is the frame size at distance exact?
- It's the thin-lens result, accurate for subjects well beyond a few focal lengths. At macro distances the effective focal length grows and the frame is smaller than calculated.
