How it works
Stitching software wants 25–35% overlap between neighbouring frames. Given your lens, sensor, orientation and the sweep you want to cover, this calculator tells you how many frames to shoot and how far to rotate between them — for a single row or a multi-row grid. Portrait orientation costs more frames per row but buys a taller result.
FAQ
- How much overlap do I need?
- 30% is the safe default; drop to 20% with a levelled tripod head and a lens with little distortion, raise it to 40% for ultra-wides or hand-held sweeps.
- Landscape or portrait?
- Portrait orientation narrows each frame horizontally (more shots) but gives more vertical coverage in a single row — usually the better trade for landscape panoramas.
- What is the step angle?
- How far to rotate between frames. On a panoramic head with click stops, pick the nearest detent at or below the step angle.
